Episode 9: Sexy Isn't a Size: Embracing Body Positivity with Lindsey Burns

When's the last time you looked in the mirror and felt confident, empowered, and truly beautiful?

For many women, this isn’t a common experience. But Lindsey Burns, a boudoir photographer based in Dallas, Texas, is on a mission to change that.

I sat down with Lindsey, a photographer with 16 years of experience, the last six of which have been dedicated to boudoir photography. Lindsey specializes in empowering women through tasteful, feminine, and sexy boudoir sessions that help women reconnect with their bodies, embrace their beauty, and cultivate a positive body image—no matter their size or shape.

Falling into Boudoir Photography

Lindsey’s journey into boudoir photography wasn’t planned. Like many great things in life, it came about unexpectedly. For her, it was when a bride asked her to do a boudoir session as part of her wedding photography package. From that first experience, seeing a nervous client walk out feeling like she could take on the world, Lindsey knew she had found something special.

“I didn’t realize how much I needed boudoir photography in my life,” Lindsey shared. It wasn’t just about helping her clients feel confident; after doing her own boudoir session, Lindsey realized how transformative the experience could be for her too.

The Power of a Positive Body Image

In a world obsessed with physical perfection, Lindsey believes that a positive body image has nothing to do with achieving a certain weight or size. It’s about shifting your perception of your body and celebrating it as it is—flaws and all.

“A positive body image isn’t about loving everything about your body. It’s about believing your body is good, regardless of how it looks,” Lindsey explained. This mindset shift can lead to a more fulfilling, empowered life.

For many of Lindsey’s clients, boudoir photography becomes a transformative experience. Women walk into her studio feeling nervous, unsure, or insecure—but they leave feeling empowered, confident, and more connected to their bodies than ever before.

The Magic Outside Your Comfort Zone

Lindsey shared how common it is for her clients to feel nervous before a session. She reassures them that it’s perfectly normal to feel this way—after all, stepping outside your comfort zone is where the magic happens. By the end of the session, nerves have melted away, replaced by a newfound sense of empowerment.

“I tell them it’s okay to feel nervous,” Lindsey said. “By the end of it, they’re always like, ‘I don’t even know why I was nervous.’”

Do It For You

While boudoir photography is sometimes seen as a gift for a partner, Lindsey emphasizes that it’s really a gift for you. Many women begin a session with the idea of gifting the photos to their partner, but by the end, they realize it’s an experience they did for themselves—one that shifts their entire perspective on their own beauty.

“I’ve had so many clients tell me, ‘I get it now. I finally see what my husband sees.’" It’s a powerful moment when a woman fully owns her beauty for herself.

Cultivating Confidence that Transforms Lives

Lindsey’s clients often discover that the confidence they gain during their session spills over into other areas of their lives. Whether it’s taking risks, trying new things, or simply showing up with more confidence in everyday situations, the transformation goes far beyond the photos. In fact, Lindsey jokes that her sessions should come with a disclaimer—that the confidence it inspires in you may cause you to try other things, or wonder where else in your life you have been putting yourself in a box.

Lindsey’s Thrive in 5 Tips for a Positive Body Image:

  1. Watch what you digest: Be mindful of the media and social content you consume. Follow body-positive accounts and avoid harmful comparisons.

  2. Stop using filters: Embrace your true self—filters only reinforce unrealistic beauty standards.

  3. Do little things for yourself: Whether it’s wearing lingerie just for you or treating yourself in small ways, it’s about feeling good in your own skin.

  4. Walk in front of the mirror naked: Think of it as exposure therapy! This helps normalize your body, making you more comfortable with what you see.

  5. Move your body for joy, not punishment: Focus on what your body can do, not how it looks. Find physical activities that make you feel good.
